As we've previously mentioned, a wound string is made up of two components; its central core and its wrap wire and the combination of these parts when added together create the overall diameter of the string (or gauge as we refer to it) . So, if we were to take a standard .026” gauge D-string, this could be made up of a .010” central core with a wrap wire of .008” (see image below) That’s how most people learn to play the G scale and don’t advance past that part of the fretboard. To REALLY understand the scale, you need to learn how to play it across all fretboard positions. G Major Scale Guitar Positions By learning what notes you’re playing, you’ll begin to see how chords and scales are constructed and improve your understanding of how music works. Guitar Scales (Contains a large amount of guitar scales that you can use in improvisation and songwriting). There are a few schools of thought when it comes to choosing a high- g string for a 12-string guitar. The first is to simply use the same gauge as the low E string. This will give you a bit more tension on the high-g string, which can be beneficial for some players. The second option is to go up to a slightly heavier gauge, such as a .013 or .014. This will give you a bit more volume and sustain on the high-g string. The third option is to go with a very light gauge, such as a .010 or .011. This will give you a bit more flexibility and playability on the high-g string. Ultimately, it is up to the player to decide which option is best for their playing style.

2. G Major – Alternate Open Chord

Any of the above can cause intonation issues. For instance, I bought my luthier-made Amalio Burguet at their factory in Valencia, Spain. As I was leaving the premises, one of the last things the salesperson told me was to never use high tension strings on it. Only normal strings, only normal tension strings, please. Although the plain 3rd seems to be the popular choice of today, there is still demand for sets with a wound 3rd string. You’ll tend to find these are mostly found in heavy gauge sets. Jazz players tend to use heavier gauges, which is why you’ll often see many flatwound sets (a jazz player’s staple) accompanied by a wound 3rd string. Position 1 refers to the E in CAGED. This could also be referred to as the “barre chord position” as barre chords are typically done by shaping an E chord with your middle, ring, and pinky fingers while barring all the strings with your index finger. The best way to run the open position of the G major scale is to first form a G major chord in an open position near the bottom of your fretboard (refer to the graphic above). If you run the scale between its root notes, you’ll fret notes on all of the strings.
