I had learnt about civil war in History lessons, and it was interesting to find out about this time in history. The problem is: their bodies may be indispensable because of their power but who they are – or at least what makes them them– is effectively expendable.

A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge review – darkly

She’s subject to a terrible hunger, enough to eat a doll – starts to weep cobwebs and to unravel herself. Combining a fairy-tale with elements of horror is a stark contrast and I think that this works well for younger readers. The former lies in the way that the fate of the Fellmotes is intermingled with that of the country and how their actions play a part in the dispute between Parliament and the King. It’s not the supernatural that’s the most terrifying and bleak, but the realistic aspects - war, poverty, subjugation, classism. ABOUT THE NOVEL: A Skinful of Shadows is a dark YA historical fantasy set in the early part of the English Civil War.I think it is Frances Hardinge's best book because her writing and description really brings you into the book, as it is really realistic - even the ghostly elements. Frances Hardinge's latest offering certainly didn't disappoint, in fact, she may just be one of my new favourite authors. Makepeace's name is also a very common puritan style name as we are told that it represent 'making peace' with the community.

In every book she creates something new, unique and complex, with solid internal rules and consistency, fleshed-out so well that these worlds feel alive and real. The final book in our list, Haunted by author Kelly Armstrong deals with a dead woman who is also a half-demon and a witch named Eve Levine. Hardinge gives the opposing Puritans a similar kind of treatment, with their inconsistencies and excesses laid bare, and it is to her great credit that she delineates the attractions and horrors of both sides, symbolised in the characters of James, a bastard tempted by nobility, and Symond, the noble heir who seems to shift allegiance. While the above-mentioned summary may not sound that unique, the overall story without doubt is a must-read. It is a bit confusing if you don't know about life in the 17th century and leading up to the English Civil war but you still can understand most of what is going on.She takes on societal prejudices, opinion echo chambers, shifting loyalties, and the need for periodic well-aimed subversion. Makepeace was a real puritan name and is the also the name of the novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray. I always knew I would be reading this book after being lucky enough to read the sampler from Netgalley back in the summer. com aims to be a community for paranormal fantasy book lovers with reader reviews, discussions on the best fantasy books or series to read, opinion pieces along with featuring some of the best upcoming authors in the genre. On that note, I also loved the protagonist Makepeace, who exhibits uncommon bravery in the face of the unknown.

After losing her mother in London riots, she is taken in by her father’s rich family as a servant — and perhaps as something else, something more and infinitely terrifying. She soon discovers that the members of this ancient, aristocratic family have the ability to capture, and be used as a vessel for, spirits, and that maybe there was more behind her mother’s decision to hide Makepeace from them than she realised.

She develops a deep rapport with her beastly fellow traveller, but often it’s “like reasoning with a thundercloud”. Her seventh novel, it revolves around Makepeace Felmotte, a girl with the inherited ability to see and absorb ghosts. She is supposed to be thankful for the roof over the head and a hot meal — but as she learns what may be expected of her and her brother, she’s horrified. Now Eve must stop Nix who has been able to drive all her previous hunters insane and is also capable of doing a lot of damage herself.
