As someone who normally wears XC shoes, I thought the Ventana would be a bit of a chore to test - heavier, flexier, bulkier, less sculpted in the fit than my normal favorites. It’s all of those things, true, but over the last couple of months, I’ve preferred wearing it for most of my off-road rides. The basic idea is a shoe that meets the demands of rough all-mountain riding, while still offering a decent level of pedaling efficiency and all-day comfort.

These shoes are compatible with MTB pedal systems, which use the 2-bolt cleat standard (SPD standard), e.g.: Shimano SPD, Time ATAC, CrankBrothers, CrankBrothers Race, Look MTB, Xtreme MTB, Wellgo MTB, Ritchey MTB. Also suitable for indoor trainers in gyms etc.The two models of Giro Ventana shoes are looked on as being the spiritual successor to the Terraduro – a shoe whose rise to prominence seemed to parallel the enduro racing movement that inspired it. And despite some early quality issues, the Terraduro has gone on to be as synonymous with trail riding and enduro racing as strapping an inner tube and a banana to your downtube. The sole of the Giro Ventana is a relatively mildly treaded ‘Sensor’ rubber sole. There’s a full rubber covering, including the instep, with slightly chunkier heel and forefoot tread. That said, I am a staunch convert to the convenience of BOA-style closure, and the ability to fine tune the fit on-the-fly is always good to have. The LP6 dial is a single-direction ratchet which tightens in 1mm increments. Similarly, the Nylon shank Giro uses in the Ventana’s sole makes for satisfactory pedaling efficiency, but on rides longer than 40 miles with a lot of pedalling I started to miss my carbon-soled shoes. Here, we must remember the purpose for which the Ventana was developed: an “in-between” shoe merging features of XC and gravity riding shoes. My regular size in Giro, Shimano and Sidi shoes is 44.5-45, and the Ventana feels at the roomier end of the spectrum compared to all the shoes I own. I wouldn’t race in them, but not once in my everyday testing did I wish they were stiffer or lighter. I also didn’t have any trouble with the offset positioning of the cleat fixing, which makes the foot sit slightly more to the outside of the pedal than usual - in fact, I liked being a few millimeters clearer of the cranks. (If you’re susceptible to knee pain you might want to take advice before altering your stance like this though.)
