About this deal

Trevor (Pemberton) and Julia ( Debbie Rush) always try to make Christmas special for their family but with money running low it is going to be more difficult than usual this year. This episode was semi-improvised. I am a fan of the anthology format, as it gives the writers a chance to play with genres and each episode is a brand new story. This collection of scripts for the first three seasons of episodes really highlights just how wonderful Reece and Steve’s writing partnership truly is.

Ronnie (Shearsmith) has spent his whole life trying to do the right thing, guided by memories of the animated 1970s public information film character Wise Owl ( Ron Cook). So yeah, typing all this out I realise I’m a champion of autonomy and originality above embracing the ordinary. Even though I suppose the ordinary is something we cannot ever truly escape, and that we all must be ordinary to some extent–it isn’t where I ever want my focus to lie. And I don’t think it’s something I will ever joyously embrace.

"Choice; Thursday 23 April". Culture, The Sunday Times. pp.60–1. Inside No. 9 is an anthology series, with each episode featuring a new story, with a new setting and new characters. [11] Episodes run roughly thirty minutes each, with the self-contained story reaching a conclusion. [12] [13] The stories are linked primarily by the fact that each has an element of the story linked to the number 9, be that a mansion, a dressing room or even a shoe, size 9. Almost every episode stars Reece Shearsmith or Steve Pemberton, and regularly both. [14] Each episode is effectively a short play. Some episodes take place in real-time, following half an hour in the lives of the characters. [15] Every episode of Inside No. 9 features an ornamental hare somewhere on-screen. [16] [17] [18] According to Pemberton, "Because each episode is so wildly different there was nothing really linking them other than the fact they were all inside a Number Nine, I just thought it would be nice to have an object that you could hide and just have there on every set." [16] There is, however, no particular significance to the hare itself. [17] [18] a b Pemberton, Steve; Shearsmith, Reece (4 May 2015). Behind the Scenes: "The 12 Days of Christine". This webisode stars Tom Verall and Dan Renton Skinner as brothers whose mother died in the Great Storm of 1987. The story is told through a series of cinemagraphs with dialogue. This book is a compilation of the scripts from the first 18 episodes of the series, aka series 1-3. There are some real standouts in this collection that I loved reading just as much as watching. Quiet Night In is a fantastic episode containing almost no sound or dialog at all, so reading the script for it was particularly fascinating. It was fun to figure out how they went to a script full of descriptions to the final product on TV, and I loved it. The Understudy is another great one that honestly would have been a perfect short story if it was published years ago. Williams, Ben (2014). Now we live in this atomised, highly individualised culture, where films can have hundreds of millions of dollars in their budget and you can not have heard of them whatsoever. Where–I guess there are still “music charts” but I have no idea what’s on them. I write, and I read, constantly. I’m doing it right now! Then I’m gonna go get another book and read some more. I barely stop to do other activities. But I have NO IDEA what has come out this year, who’s popular, who’s the next big name, whatever. These days I’m amazed that TV is still a thing. With the channels and all that. I watch Netflix or nothing. Rose d'Or Awards: Cancelled comedy Raised By Wolves wins best sitcom". BBC. 14 September 2016. Archived from the original on 15 September 2016 . Retrieved 14 September 2016. I seem to have, I’ve noticed recently, a complicated relationship with the ordinary. It keeps cropping up in my writing as something characters resent, or have allowed to wash over them too much, such that they have lost their true paths in life.At the 2019 British Academy Television Awards, Pemberton won for Best Male Comedy Performance, while at the 2019 British Academy Television Craft Awards, Barbara Wiltshare won for Best Director: Multi-Camera. Like saying, “The pre-existing is enough for me.” (Interesting that, “Your best is good enough” is a healthy reaction to your own performance, but it sounds too close to embracing the ordinary for me to allow it to myself.) The joy of these scripts is in being able to appreciate the craft and ambition involved in the sharpness of the dialogue, the cunning of the plotting, and the desire never to repeat themselves, as Pemberton and Shearsmith build each episode into a miniaturist treasure. A must for anyone who wants to write for television, or who just wants to see how the magic is done.’ Farber, Alex (6 March 2014). "Family Guy on top for BBC3". Broadcast.
