In some ways, the spec of the AVR-X2800H isn’t that dramatically different from its predecessor. But that’s partly because the AVR-X2700H was already one of the most comprehensive, reasonably priced AVRs available. The two woofers in the 7.2 configuration ring out when you need them to, and never spoil the crystal clarity of the music or the surround effects.

As its Product of the Year Award status may suggest, the Denon AVR-X2800H is a brilliant home cinema amp. It offers a more spacious and refined sound when compared with its predecessor, which is surprising as it shares many of the same components as the AVR-X2700H.

The Sony is also well equipped when it comes to wireless connectivity, which includes Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Chromecast and even Works with Sonos, which means you can integrate this amp with your Sonos multi-room setup if you have one. Despite the price hike, the AVR-X2800H still sits at the head of the class, just as its excellent predecessor did.There are wonderful details of the bottles, cans and newspapers spilling out of the glove compartment, the revving engine and the maniacal ringing of the railway crossing bell, and then just the still of the cicadas in the night when the clamour suddenly stops. There's also a European version with DAB, which is somewhat more interesting, but that's not available in the UK, presumably so that the price here could be kept as sharp as possible.
