Our Sound Blaster G3 is a portable USB audio DAC and amp that is designed to help you sound more professional and communicate clearly. All you need to do is to plug in the Sound Blaster G3 to your PC or Mac, connect it with your headphones that comes with a built-in mic, and change your video call app’s audio settings. I don’t have audiophile quality hearing, but there is a perceived improvement switching from on-device audio to using this DAC. Chatting with your team while gaming on PS4? On Windows, you can use the Creative app with SmartComms Kit. This software is required to make the most of the various microphone features such as SmartComms with its auto-muting.For Window users, there's also Dolby Digital Live 1 for convenience of encoding any audio sources to multi-channel surround sound in real-time, all while transmitting data using only a single optical cable solution for decoding on a home theater system. However, for general use, there is no need to install anything, the DAC has dedicated buttons for the EQ offering bass boost and dynamic EQ, plus there is a direct mic mute button. I have noticed some people say USB-C DACs don’t always play nice with some phones, such as OnePlus, but I experienced no issues with any of the devices I tested this on. One thing to note is that the G3 is still a tethered amp, meaning you’re going to have wires trailing from your PS4 (or whatever device you use it on) to your ears. That’s still not an ideal setup for me, and the G3 isn’t even compatible with a number of my preferred wireless headsets, as none of them use a 3.5mm connection. I’ve been trying to clean up my living room space, hide cables away, and generally not have clutter. The G3 is a more portable unit than the G6, but its smaller size does come with a caveat: it’s USB cable is a short dongle built into the device. That means no finding a nice place to put the G3. It either sits right in front of your PS4, or in my case, dangles awkwardly from the vertical PS4. It’s less than ideal. In terms of connectivity, three options are provided: dual 3.5mm (for PCs), single 3.5mm (for PC, mobile, Switch, PS5 and Xbox) and USB-A (for PS5 and PC). That means you can use these headphones on the go just as easily as at home on your PC or console. USB comes via an included dongle which adds the simulated 7.1 capabilities, microphone settings (like a noise gate and side tone) and compatibility with Razer's Synapse software.
The EQ allows tweaking the audio further by adding a bass boost or dynamic EQ. I found it provides a pleasance boost to bass when wanted, it is not excessive but does liven up some genres like Hip Hop and Electronica nicely. One of the selling points of this DAC is its ability to auto-mute the microphone when not in use, reducing unwanted noise on calls. I have used this for a few Zoom calls so far, and it works well; importantly, there doesn’t seem to be any issue un-muting when I speak, so no one on my calls has ever complained about not hearing me.

The PS4 and PC both support headsets that connect via 3.5mm (either dual 3-pole or 4-pole), optical, Bluetooth and USB. Meanwhile, the Xbox One didn't include 3.5mm on its first-generation controllers, requiring the use of an Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter to add this option. The Xbox also only works with certified USB devices and uses its own proprietary wireless standard rather than Bluetooth, so you'll need to look for headsets that are specifically marketed as Xbox Series or Xbox One compatible. The final option is getting a headset that connects via optical (S/PDIF), although this isn't available on the Xbox Series X or S. It is Windows only, so it won’t benefit everyone. The Sound Blaster G3 is a great little portable audio amp with very specific applications. Before just running out and grabbing one, you’ll want to make sure it’s something that will work seamlessly in your setup. However, if you game at a desk and don’t mind being tethered to your console, it’s a great way to get better sound and more features out of your headphones, especially if you don’t want to break the bank and invest in higher quality cans. Even with good quality headsets, however, the G3 will make a marked improvement, and likely offer a number of features missing from any headset that plugs in via 3.5mm connection. The light weight (300 grams), memory foam ear cups and only moderate clamping strength means that these headsets feel comfortable to wear for long periods, and the plastic construction feels relatively sturdy in the hand with metal sliders for added durability. Rotating ear cups are handy if you fancy letting your ears rest for a while, but you still want to be able to hear the broad strokes of your game. What's not so handy is the Micro USB charging, which has been retained even on the new PS5-branded model and is a bit annoying in 2023 where almost everything is USB-C. You'll also need to press the power button twice after turning it on to disable the lighting - I wish the headset would just remember this setting as the lighting adds nothing to the experience but harms battery life significantly. For this reason, it’s “easy access” controls also become less-than-easy-access if you’re not running a desktop setup for your console. For a device that is supposed to put these controls at your fingertips, it also requires you to have your console basically at your fingertips. While I love that it adds these capabilities to less feature-rich headphones, it’s also pretty inconvenient unless your setup can accommodate it. It also means your headphone cable needs to be long enough to reach, which in my specific application, none of them were. I don’t have any headphones with 10+ foot cables.
