About this deal

Colourfix primer is screenprinted onto 300gsm hot pressed watercolour paper. The primer contains silica, which gives the paper its gritty tooth. Artists can buy the paper in three surface finishes, original which has a medium tooth, smooth and rough. My current favorite sanded paper is Uart, though I still love Colourfix for its many colors. I’m a papers and textures nut. Both pastels and surfaces I like to try everything at least once and understan how it handles, then use it when I want that effect. Coarse is great for mad, mad layering. Fine grits are pleasant and allow more layering while also allowing finer small details. Coated papers like PastelMat are also a joy.

But many artists use the grid method or a projector to transfer their drawings. Both are acceptable alternatives to regular transfer papers, and both give great results. Touch has a ‘micro-abrasive’ texture of screen-printed sanded primer, but with a less regular pattern on its surface than Colourfix. The coating is only resistant to very small amounts of water or alcohol, providing you do not scrub its surface. It’s also suited to chalk and neat acrylic paint, sanguine and charcoal, and great for layering colour.

This is a premium sanded paper that comes in four different grades: 400, 500, 600 and 800. The 800 grade has the finest grit surface and the 400 paper has the coarsest grit. If you want a paper that you can blend easily with your finger, go for the 800 grit, as the others won’t be suitable for this technique. Many fixatives darken pastel colors. SpectraFix doesn’t as long as you apply it in VERY light layers. I use a fine mist sprayer to make sure I don’t get heavy droplets. Ideally, spray your work several times while you work. This helps the pastels to adhere to the paper better long term. Over the years, pastels start to dust off your paper. Not generally to the point where the work totally disappears, I don’t want to freak anyone out. It’s not THAT bad, but if you look at framed pastel work that isn’t sprayed with any fixatives, you will notice a dusting of pastel on the inner mat. A fixative will help to minimize this. It also will help seal previous layers down for better layering. Tip #3 Size

The coating is water and alcohol resistant, so artists can use both wet and dry media on the paper. Pastel artists may have to mount or tape this paper to a board, as the sheets tend to have a natural curve.I conduct most experiments on a small scale. In this case, the painting is an ACEO (also known as Art Trading Cards). An ACEO is large enough to allow a good amount of detail work and small enough to be completed in a single sitting if need be. This allows for a specific look that most artists actually prefer as opposed to other finishes. The most common sort of paper that you generally get without even knowing is called Ingres paper or laid paper. Using toned paperfor coloured pencil and pastel drawings can bring a few benefits to your practice and make the drawing process more efficient. When working on portraits, the paper can act as a mid tone colour, saving artists time in filling in these areas with pastel themselves. This works especially well when completing monochromatic drawings. Working on a mid tone can also help the artist determine value relationships more easily. All papers on this list come in a variety of tones and colours. Best pastel paper for mixed media You’d mentioned starting with cream as closest to white. That’s what I was used to as well, but the first time I tried a gray paper I found out how much faster it was to use charcoal and white charcoal for sketching. The gentleman I spoke with talked about the lengthy and trying process of getting the Pastel Premier paper to the point it is now. With about two years invested in working out the kinks they are finally good to go. When Wallis papers went out of circulation due to production issues, Global stepped in to try to save it. They worked with the existing Wallis paper maker for quite a while but eventually realized that they needed to switch to a different paper factory. They are now using a state of the art industrial abrasives manufacturing facility that can produce a consistent, quality product for them.

Coloured, gritty Colourfix Primer containing silica particles is screen-printed onto 300gsm hot pressed European watercolour paper, and is available in three grades: Original (medium grit), Smooth (fine) and Rough (formerly known as Supertooth). The additional weight of the coating gives a total weight of 340gsm for this paper. The texture appears as a regular pattern which is visible through layers of pastel – which sets it apart from Pastelmat or Mi-Teintes Touch, where heavy layers of pastel appear completely smooth. It is both alcohol and water resistant. The softer tooth of Colourfix Smooth will still hold multiple layers of pastel. Pots of the textured ground they apply to this paper are available in the same range of tooth and colours (plus a clear version), so that you can prime your own surfaces. The end result was satisfactory, in my opinion. The sandpaper surface allowed me to create a very painterly look, with a lot of color. Acrylic gesso mixed with one of the Derivan Matisse dry powders which include a variety of sands, crushed stones and powders or with marble dust I found that a detailed drawing is unnecessary with this paper because of the difficulty of transferring an image by traditional means. So I sketched a basic landscape and then began shading the shapes, working throughout the composition to build color. Work lightly at first, with a delicate touch, then gradually build pressure applied to the pastel slightly with consecutive layers. Very little pressure is required to impart pastel onto the paper. If you want to make a more vibrant mark, apply a little more pressure.I’ve found this difference to be less than ideal. I like detailed line drawings when I do portraits. For a while, that made sanded art papers a no-go for me. With pure sanded paper or even Pastelmat, when gliding the pencil across the surface, on occasions it feels like particles or grit from the surface gets caught between the pencil core and paper surface, which causes minor scratches. Of all the testing I completed with the Lux Archival, nothing at all like that happened and I am not in any way putting down the other papers, they all have their own wonderful qualities and places in the art world, but the Lux Archival is really special. Granted, it will take a lot more layers to get fine detail if that’s what you’re after and you may find the extra layers not to be worth the trouble.

This review guide will enlighten you regarding various types of pastel paper on the market and the best paper for soft pastels for your convenience. When I thought the painting was finished, I sprayed it with workable fixative and let it air in an area with good ventilation.

I’ve used only Uart and Fisher 400. Following are five of the biggest differences I discovered. Paper Strength A water and alcohol resistant paper will work best for mixed media applications. Some coated papers, such as Hahnemuhle Velour are unsuitable for mixed media use, as even the slightest bit of water can ruin the coated texture.
