About this deal

The Wayfinder’s performance was heavily affected by being submerged in water. The inside of the lighter got wet even when the cap was on. Also, air bubbles came out of the fuel refill port, which made me wonder if water was entering the fuel chamber. Piezo-electric lighters— like the UCO and UST — use a spring-loaded hammer to hit a piezo-electric crystal and create an electrical charge.

The lighters we tested ranged from 0.39-3.21 oz. That isn’t terribly heavy in the grand scheme of things, but relatively speaking the heaviest lighter weighs over 8 times as much as the lightest. Pipe lighters solve this by changing the design of the lighter. Instead of having the flame come out of the top, the flame comes out of the side of the lighter. In other designs, the flame is encased in metal so it can be pointed down into a pipe. When you spin the wheel with enough speed, it rubs on the flint and creates a spark. Pressing down on the “fork” (the plastic lever below the sparkwheel) opens a valve so fuel can be released. Illumination: Hands-down, a flashlight is something you should have in your everyday carry. However, flashlights rely on batteries and, of course, batteries sometimes die. Should that happen to you when you need light, a lighter can provide some temporary, albeit smaller-scale illumination in a pinch. That goes double if you use it to ignite a torch or lantern — which can offer even more light. There are many factors that make survival lighters different from disposable ones. In general, however, survival lighters are more durable, more resistant to the elements, and more capable of delivering a reliable ignition source than disposable lighters. There are two versions of this lighter: one comes with a bottle opener, the other with duct tape. I tested the duct tape version. UST Wayfinder Lighter The TitanLightis a high quality addition to the Exotac Range and is a waterproof solution to a liquid fuel lighter.

Now, I don’t mean this lighter doesn’t light consistently. It does. The Zippo was the third most reliable lighter in that regard, lighting 175 out of 200 times. After all, the point of buying a survival lighter is so that you’re prepared for ANY survival scenarios that could arise in the future. Choosing a lighter, therefore, that is either refillable or rechargeable is a smart selection. In a pinch, you can also use other fuels in a Zippo lighter, including butane, naptha (also called white gas or Coleman fuel), or gasoline. There are a few different things you need to keep in mind when choosing your lighter. These are a long way from your cheap gas-station disposable lighters with some having highly robust flames, windproof capability, and some even have waterproof housings. What type of flame? To refill, unscrew the bottom cap and be careful not to overfill (Approx. 3mL). To replace the flint, simply press the small brass pin through while holding the flame guard down then pull off the flame guard to access the flint and spring. Watch for small spring and remainder of flint to fall out. FEATURES: The Blazer CG-001 boasts a flip-top safety cover and a key ring latch for easy, one-touch operation. It houses a piezo-electric ignition system, which utilizes a pressurized molecular reaction to provide a reliable spark every time. Additionally, this survival lighter produces a wind-resistant flame that can reach temperatures up to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. 9. UST Tekfire Lighter

Also called jet lighters, turbo lighters, or cigar lighters, butane torch lighters contain butane stored in a pressurized chamber. The fuel is forced through a nozzle with air, creating a very intense, strong, and hot flame. They are basically like mini Bunsen burners. On the plus side, Zippo fluid is made of a petroleum distillate which ignites easily and burns cleanly. Generally, it is not recommended to stray from a manufacturer’s recommendation unless you have considerable experience with fuel types and how to harness their power with the specific survival lighting instrument you’ll be using. With a Zippo lighter, for example, gasoline and diesel fuel can, in theory, work, but it isn’t recommended to try unless in dire conditions. The Mini BIC is also decently water-resistant. After performing 3 “Soak Tests” with it — submerging the lighter in water, shaking it out, and then trying to light it in 1-minute intervals — it took an average of 2 minutes before it started lighting again consistently.Soft flame styles (think: plastic gas-station lighters) are traditional and all-purpose, but they’ll only frustrate you when trying to light a cigar or dense material. Torch-style lighters have enough oomph to get your cigars lit beautifully, though. What type of fuel? Note that there is a lot of crossover in these types of lighters. For example, utility lighters can also be spark ignition or electric arc lighters. 1. Plastic Sparkwheel Lighters Note that many plastic sparkwheel lighters are actually refillable (see how to refill a BIC lighter). However, because they are so cheap, most people treat them as disposable. The major factor that impacts lighters at altitude is thin air. Fire needs oxygen to burn. As you move higher in elevation, there is less oxygen and, subsequently, many butane lighters can begin struggling to create and maintain a strong flame. In addition, strong winds also become an increasing factor as you climb higher in elevation in most places. For these reasons, many high altitude expeditions carry flameless survival lighters that rely on an electric or plasma ignition source. Summary

Pipes can be difficult to light with traditional lighters; the flame can burn your fingers when you turn it upside down towards the pipe. These are plastic lighters that have a wheel made out of serrated steel. A flint is located below the wheel. Yes, but doing so requires you to look into the specific cleaning instructions recommended by your lighter’s manufacturer. Electric and plasma lighters, as you might imagine, require different cleaning approaches than you’d use for a traditional butane lighter. Electric lighters can actually require more regular cleaning because of the importance of keeping the tip clean at all times. Are you going to use it for multiple purposes or a singular use? Do you want the ability to refill it with butane or fuel?

Types of Lighters

Plasma lighters function in largely the same manner as electric lighters. They run on batteries that can be recharged. They don’t rely on an extinguishable flame. And they provide greater resistance to wind and moisture. From a scientific standpoint, there is some debate over the technical differences of plasma and electricity ( 5), but for all practical purposes, lighters that use these fuel sources function almost identically.
