The reader knows this isn’t going to end well, but when the inevitable twist came, I had to pick my jaw off the floor…it was brilliant. The first two-thirds of the book was gripping and I would have given that five stars, but the last bit was anti-climatic. Instead it seemed an ideal opportunity to show how divergent women’s lives can be in spite of similar beginnings.

Jewell throws together two women-- birthday twins, born on the same day in the same hospital -- from very different backgrounds. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat. It’s like listening to a concerto slowly raises its tempo and as you reach the ending, you hear the crescendo: that’s moment the earth shattering revelation squeezes your heart, you barely breathe! When Josie shows up beaten and bruised one night on Alix’s doorstep, she leaves Alix little choice but to let her stay temporarily. This means there won’t be a classic Lisa Jewell novel coming in 2024, but I hope that some of you might take a punt on my foray into sci-fi!Some of those, like the work of the always brilliant Barbra Streisand and Meryl Streep, were not surprising, but others were unexpected discoveries that left us mesmerized and moved. Nathan sits heavily next to her and rolls his Scotch around a solitary ice cube, one of the huge cylindrical ones he makes from mineral water. Josie lets Alix into her life and history through the podcast and Alix, in turn, gradually lets Josie into her life too. Then the narrative jumps around between Alix and Josie’s “present day” perspectives, as well as clips from the Netflix documentary and Alix’s eventual podcast.
