About this deal

If you are considering an SB5000 versus an SB910, both are Nikon flagship offerings, and flash output and recycle times are near equal to each other. it makes sense to have an RF transmitter with a quick push/touch menu dedicated to the task of controlling your RF flashes rather than entering the camera's menu system each time you need to make adjustments. Yes, the SB900 has issues with shutting down due to the overheat protection feature, and yes if you turn off the overheat protection feature you may have zero issues…or you may explode your flash! Under Auto or Flash White Balance, most Nikons are smart enough to set the WB appropriately when you use the green filter under fluorescent light and the orange filter under normal tungsten and halogen light; there are little tabs on the filters that key a sensor on the flash that talks to your digital camera. No, they don't support AA mode, and that's a pity, but as fully manual and RF triggerable speedlights they're in many ways superior to Nikon's unreliable optical triggering CLS models.

If you are into freeze-frame the SB-910 has a faster flash duration at the far end of the scale of 1/38,500 (might not make all that much difference). Flash head style is something I want to play with a lot, but if the flash is in standby, for instance, I have to push one button, hold a second one, press that button again, use the control wheel, then press the button one last time to make a change. The overheating indicator turns on after 20 shots of the Nikon SB-910 at full power 1/1 - not enough for a professional flash. The Nikon Speedlight SB-910 is an excellent professional flash, a slightly improved version of the SB-900. Case Study: I use a Lastolite Studio Cubelite for product photography which you can place a flash underneath for dramatic lighting opportunities, the problem is (was) you are forced to use a continuous light or run a flash sync cord or use a pocket wizard on the lower flash as an Optical line of sight will not work. I actually tried this with some nearly dead batteries--which usually represent the worst case for recycling--and was surprised to still see a major difference between my SB-800 and SB-900. TTL BL only works with relatively new lenses that can transmit the distance to the target (D, G, E, Z series).

Because obviously if they’ve only ever made that one choice, and they’re happy with it, they’ll speak highly of it! Once the menus are active, you scroll between major items using the control wheel, get to the options by pressing OK, scrolling to the option you want, then pressing OK again. When working with Nikon SB-900 with the overheating mode on, the flash after a series of firing simply goes into cooling mode, the overheating image appears on the display. The SB-900/910 was replaced by the SB-5000 when the D5 generation cameras began appearing (D5, D500, D850, D7500), but can still be used by those cameras. and you can install that by downloading the proper file from Nikon's Web site and using a D90, D7000, D7100, D300, D600, D700, D800, D3 series, or D4 to perform the update (these cameras must have their firmware at the current version first).Announced with the D700, the SB-900 didn't get as much mention or notice as the new camera, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the more significant announcement.
