About this deal

So if you are in the mood for a series of advice colums, arranged artfully and well written, check this one out, and lets see if we can get it into every library in the US; but for me it went on a good bit too long.

If you want to read porny micrononfiction about coked-out hooks up, have at it, this book is your jam. I can see how some thoughts might be problematic (safe-sex for example, and the views presented) but again, who are any of us to judge? In contrast, when discussing the judgment he feels about his decision to have unprotected sex, he spends pages explaining why the AIDS epidemic, gay bashing, and a variety of other historical factors justify his decision. Second, Boyslut is yet another memoir/manifesto, like that awful All Boys Aren't Blue, that was written in a rush of synthetic, egocentric, Millennial/Gen Z blather.

I know that’s not sustainable and will fade over time, so I’m enjoying my good looks while I have them, knowing it won’t be forever. There is a reason why everyone isn’t having incredible sex: It requires communication, vulnerability, and knowing — owning — what you like.

There were parts of his story that he took time with and seemed to really show us the vulnerable process of it all and then others where his humor and bluntness sort of seemed almost to deflect from any real insight to what he was talking about. His therapist reassured him that there was nothing bad about picturing people naked, and once he stops thinking it’s bad, he’ll be able to stop dwelling on them. In a world where sexuality and masculinity are often misunderstood and conflated, Zachary Zane manages to use his own unique experiences to knock down stigmas and expand what it means to have a healthy relationship with sex. While I agree wholeheartedly, I do not think we, and by “we” I mean the world, will ever rid ourselves of gender stereotypes completely.

This doesn’t mean they are in any way didactic—they're always accessible, often funny, and, best of all, they leave the reader with the admonishment that ‘being kind doesn’t cost you a dime. It invites you to say "hang on, that's a bit much" because then you've fallen into the very same societal trap of judging sex when, really, it's all up to an individual in how they wish to discuss it.From stories of play sessions with a neighbor at age six to the first explorations of Zane's bisexuality in college, as well as sex parties, orgies, and fun with butt plugs, Boyslut is reassuring and often painfully funny-and most potently, it is a testimony that we can all learn to live healthier lives unburdened by stigma. This doesn't mean they are in any way didactic--they're always accessible, often funny, and, best of all, they leave the reader with the admonishment that "being kind doesn't cost you a dime.
