About this deal

Equally engaging, if decidedly less sympathetic, is entrepreneurial grifter Tyler, whose comeuppance I was vying for almost as soon as he shows up, seemingly wanting to control Brian from the off. The title of this book is such a hilarious draw to read it, and it really gets across the tone, which is partly satirical, partly fun, and partly a sincere look at queer community and finding your people. Personally, I prefer the satirical and somewhat bitter tone of the beginning, and as such, I was hoping for a different ending. Characters are good, but we never feel like we know enough about Darby and Nik, as the story focuses so much on Tyler and his clique.

The reveal about Darby’s boyfriend, Abe, was also fun, though I did kinda have a suspicion it was something like that. The conclusion of the book strongly hinted at the possibility of a follow-up instalment, which left me eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the story of Brian and his companions. As Brian delves deeper into Tyler's worldview, darker motivations emerge, and he must use everything he's learned and everyone he knows to escape it. It was pretty unusual with the combination of satire, fantasy elements and a moving, heartwarming portrayal of queer friendships. Bored Gay Werewolf is a novel about an aimless guy who happens to be a werewolf and what happens when he meets someone trying to create what seems to be a start-up for werewolves.

Corvus Atlantic’s commercial fiction list which includes women’s, historical, romance, sci-fi, crime and thriller. While resistant initially, Brian discovers purpose in Tyler's world, but it strains his relationships with other friends.

For me I found that It was a pleasant surprise to find a book that didn't rely on romantic subplots to drive the story forward. While I was not surprised by some of the revelations, I was pleased to have worked it out and I wonder if a sequel will be in the works. On the other hand, the fact that Brian's friends guessed long ago that he's a werewolf was charming.Notwithstanding the lycanthropic occurrences, Santorella’s depiction of twentysomething contemporary life feels truthful and representative, and Bored Gay Werewolf’s secondary characters take their place in this tapestry with diverting results as it heads to the conclusion. This more serious tone was actually quite interesting and explored themes you would often expect to find in dark academia books (ones such as classism, toxic friendships/relationships, misogyny, homophobia, toxic masculinity, and more) and did so in a way that you were clearly meant to find uncomfortable.

But as Brian gets closer to Tyler's pack and drifts further away from Nik and Darby, he realises that Tyler's expansion plans are much more nefarious than a little lupine enlightenment.

However, the ending is a little rushed and cheesy, as we cross a line into higher fantasy than the rest of the story, but many readers will welcome the possibility of a second. Brian, an aimless slacker in his twenties, works double shifts at his waiter job, forgets to clean his room and gets black-out drunk with his restaurant comrades, Nik and Darby. Nik is warm and sensible but takes no shit, and is exactly the kind of work mum everyone should have in their life. Towards the end, the topical jokes veer towards the "cringy" side, heavy on quippy dialogue and millennial humor. Admittedly, I like to think I hold life to a higher standard than Brian's fairly flippant "oopsie-daisies", but than again, I'm not a werewolf.
