About this deal

Berry’s rich 2016 debut, “Under the Harrow,” about a woman hellbent on finding her sister’s murderer, won the Edgar Award for best first novel. Drawn from the personal experiences of its author, this is a glittering love letter to the Great White Way, and all the crazy, gifted people who keep it humming.

This is another biography and I liked it so much because it shed light on the inner life of an American hero: Aviator Charles Lindbergh. A powerful additive is her father is a Lord from the United Kingdom hierarchy, which was thought that his privileged friends aided and abetted him. After all the thick tomes by Fyodors and Leos and Ivans, here we have a slim tale authored by a woman, and that alone should alert us that our old expectations may need to be altered. Lo mejor del libro viene tal vez el 70% del mismo y al final nos enteramos de si el padre realmente es o no un asesino, al menos no me he quedado con la duda y dicho sea de paso la protagonista se queda con un problema mental menos.Take Stieg Larsson’s best seller “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” which lingers unbearably, for pages and pages, over the description of Lisbeth’s rape.

It is hard to overstate just how assured this novel is as Philby delivers a masterclass in plotting and I would recommend it to readers who appreciate a character-driven crime novel with depth. That aside, we begin promisingly enough with Gabriela settling into the FCO and Isobel's rather dysfunctional lifestyle as a reporter in Camden. Few American icons provoke more enduring fascination than Charles Lindbergh-renowned for his one-man transatlantic flight in 1927, remembered for the sorrow surrounding the kidnapping and death of his firstborn son in 1932, and reviled by many for his opposition to America's entry into World War II. I fell into the vivid, frightening world Charlotte Philby creates so skilfully and didn't resurface until long after I'd turned the last page.Marvin McIntyre is the number-one-rated financial advisor in Washington, DC, by both Barron’s Magazine and Forbes. Thirty years ago, while Claire and her baby brother slept, a brutal attack took place in their home. Beautifully written, stand out characters and a hugely immersive sense of place and time make A Double Life an absolute must read. A Double Life is a dull tale about Claire, a doctor and traumatized woman still struggling with the violence her father inflicted on her family over two decades ago.

A seriously stylish, hugely compelling mystery: Charlotte Philby redefines a male-dominated genre with her brilliantly complex female characters. Of the 2020 album Rough and Rowdy Ways, beloved by non-Dylan obsessives, reviews praised the consistency of its songwriting. Then there are the albums and songs that reveal the genius of an artist whose lyrics draw on centuries of American culture but who refuses to be shackled to his own past. Sounes pointed out how overlong and baggy Heylin’s Dylan books are (he’s written 13): “All he knows is how to tell me what Visions of Johanna means in his mind.In his introduction to volume one of this humungous book (published in 2021), Heylin said that Sounes wrote depressingly well-trundled semi-literate strolls. It was rare that I questioned what was happening in the plot or the thought processes of the characters. The ending of the book, however, went in an unexpected direction that didn’t add to the story but only served to confuse the narrative.
