About this deal

Say hello to the final Scotch in our peated Bruichladdich run: Port Charlotte 10 Years. I did a PC10 review a few years ago, but I wanted to see if more than the bottle got a facelift. And, spoiler, it did. But that’s to be expected with a distillery whose goal is flavor, not consistency.

Got some great news yesterday… Eldest daughters’ partner proposed while on hols over in South Australia… on the stroke of midnight… I need to celebrate with with something nice …. There too Bruichladdich planned to create a new distillery in which to produce heavily-peated whisky, but the plans never came to fruition, and it seems highly unlikely that distilling will return to the village since the acquisition of Bruichladdich by French company Rémy Cointreau in 2012.

Stay Informed

Port Charlotte whisky gets its name from the village of Port Charlotte, a white-walled and windswept sort of place just a couple of kilometers down the road from Bruichladdich. This release, Port Charlotte 10, is distilled from 100% Scottish barley peated to 40 ppm. Ppm stands for parts per million phenol, a common method for for gauging the smokiness of malted barley that isn’t always useful for consumers. The distillate ages at least 10 years on Islay in a mix of first- and second-fill American whiskey casks, and second-fill French wine casks. It’s bottled at 50% ABV and, like all of Bruichladdich’s whiskies, without coloring or chill filtration. In 1864 the Inland Revenue officer, Francis Gill, who was stationed at the distillery was found drowned on 5 September in Laggan Bay. Age:

Bruichladdich have already experimented with heavily peated whisky, releasing the Port Charlotte series in 2006, though not to be confused with the bottlings that will surely come from their new venture. The organic malted barley used at the Port Charlotte distillery will be at least 50ppm, reaching those lofty peat levels of the more pungent Ìleach single malts. One can already reserve whisky from the distillery, Bruichladdich have destined the first 100 casks for general sale to the public. Since Bruichladdich’s resurrection in 2001, our ambitions have gone beyond the simple idea of making and selling single malt scotch whisky. Our goal was to be an antidote to the industry norm.
