About this deal

It wasn't like a published book but like the author's poetry diary - messy, not making sense at times and some things pr bably no one but the author understands. The following poem is “it is too late”, a piece that explores the loss of language as an impact of colonial violence and intergenerational trauma. The speaker feels that others only accept their flaws once they’ve softened into something malleable, easier to control.

I wasn’t aware at the time of the many ways to prevent or treat a panic attack, ranging from breathing exercises to ongoing therapy. When you are a little kid, nobody tells you that getting the degrees and the jobs does not warranty you the feeling of growth and final satisfaction that you think you are aiming for. As seen in the poem “00088614,” simpson repeats the numbers over and over again to address the trauma of just being a number. The four sections of this book pull your emotions in different and deliberate ways, ruminating on queer Indigenous love, kinship, and loss with a lyricism that seems to leave the page and live, forever, in your gut. As bans on the use of fur become more commonplace, the Animal Welfare in Fashion report highlights how out of step many luxury brands are with the rest of the industry.

jaye simpson offers no repose for those who have wronged them, but offers a transcendental and essential work of poetic and literary mastery. The opening poem, “sea glass,” has the build-up of a tidal wave, beginning with a "dreamy hot day, / beachside stomach full of fruit, / skin kissed by the sun. simpson has recently been named the Vancouver Champion for the Women of the World Poetry Slam and their work has been featured in Poetry Is Dead, This Magazine, PRISM international, SAD Mag, GUTS Magazine and Room. There are also poems as odes to songs by artists like by Florence + the Machine and Amy Winehouse, which adds to the lyrical nature of simpson’s work. jaye simpson is a master of the craft of words weaving a rich web of words that transform beyond the page into the story telling tradition many Indigenous Peoples have been using since time immemorial.

Their concrete poems are effective in how they challenge the reader and make them think differently. Content is for informational purposes only and is not meant to serve as medical advice or to replace consultation with your physician or mental health professional. In this stunning debut they speak truths to the complexities of the body, land and memory through an intimately structured and poignant cadence. For all low performing brands, the continued use of “unacceptable” animal products had “the most adverse impact on their scores”. simpson resides on the unceded and ancestral territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), səlilwəta’Ɂɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) First Nations peoples, currently and colonially known as Vancouver, BC. This poem manages to tell an entire story in a few pages and uses visceral images that evoke emotion.
