About this deal

There are plenty of things to talk about throughout the story - rich vs poor, politics, gang culture, theft, execution, boys vs girls and I'm sure many more that a talented teacher could pull out. As an adult reader the plot is fairly obvious, but I'm not sure the intended age range would see it that way. The principle characters are well defined and likeable (those that are supposed to be!) and mainly convincing. The end was a little over the top for my liking, and so didn't feel very authentic to me. Julia Golding (born in 1969) grew up near Epping Forest in Essex and, as a child, used to love making up stories about the trees she could see from her bedroom window. Later, she studied English literature at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Her focus on changes in society during the industrial revolution inspired her to write The Diamond of Drury Lane. As a child she was inspired by books that placed importance on using your imagination to help you through hard times.

Catherine "Cat" Royal is a foundling adopted by London's Drury Lane theater, circa the late 1700s. It's a position that lets her mingle with cast, crew, and audience members both high and low. When she overhears theater manager Mr. Sheridan saying how he is hiding a diamond in Drury Lane, her curiosity is piqued, although her discovery and subsequent protection of this diamond isn't exactly what anybody suspects.

In addition, Karbo penned three books in the Minerva Clark mystery series for children: Minerva Clark Gets A Clue, Minerva Clark Goes to the Dogs, and Minerva Clark Gives Up the Ghost. Mimi said even if Ralph was single she wasn’t sure she’d marry him. This was a lie but she liked the way it sounded. She said she thought being married to Ralph was probably like being married to Kafka. Lisa said Kafka was better than nobody. A long conversation followed in which Mimi and Lisa thought of awful, famous men no one could pay them enough to be married to. > I-15, San Diego, CA, US: In the first 6 years, HOV lane operation showed general lane person trips increased by 17% whereas person trips in HOVs grew by 109%. Also, the Average Vehicle Occupancy increased from 1.25 to 1.38. However, a street gang led by Cat's enemy Billy "Boil" Shepherd ("Boil" being a reference to the boil on his nose), learns about the diamond, and assumes it is a real diamond. He breaks into the Theatre to steal it, bringing a few members of the gang with him. Cat and Pedro manage to evade him, but Cat is arrested for having money that was supposed to be for smuggling Johnny out of England where he will be safe. The money was really pawned jewels from Elizabeth, which she had given Cat permission to take to the pawn brokers, but the people who arrest her do not believe this. Billy is also arrested for stealing the money, although it was not actually him who stole it, but two members of his gang. Johnny's father Lord Fitzroy, however, knows the true reason to why Cat had the money in the first place, and arranges for her to be set free. Unfortunately, Billy is also set free later on, and the two gang members replace him in prison. Providing solace, advice and commiseration for anyone trying to make sense of a family tree gone haywire with divorce and remarriage, this hilarious latest effort by novelist and journalist Karbo Continue reading »

Life here was weighted with the vague feeling that if anything was happening, it was happening wherever one wasn’t. Maybe that accounted for all the driving…Eleven million people scurrying around, trying to find the exclusive exciting event that would make them feel at the center of something big. Karen Karbo, whose 1991 novel The Diamond Lane has been reissued by Hawthorne Books, considered the myriad changes in publishing over that time in a post on the blog at Powell’s Books, Portland, Ore. Her observations include this succinct analysis... Forward Unlike many of her peers Cat can read and write, taught to her by the previous prompt at Drury Lane. She is also street smart and knows how to handle herself when left on her own.

Research says that HOV lanes promote traveling together. Hence, this will help to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and air pollution in the transportation industry. This book is beautifully written, exciting and full of interesting historical information and characters. It’s also very funny, Cat’s narration is excellent and vivid. Despite the adventure Julia Golding has not ignored the darker side to Cat’s world which I think is great. Motorcycles, public mass transit, and para-transit vehicles are also exempted from the occupancy requirement under California Vehicle Code §§21655.5 . Other bus services, such as school bus, charter, or sightseeing transports, are not exempted and must carry the minimum number of occupant to be eligible. How Are HOV Lanes Enforced? This is what I learned … from Hollywood…the rich man, his worry goes for useless, stupid things. Frequent-flyer programs are not a thing. It makes your soul feel like a used condom tossed out the car window … but what am I supposed to do … lose all those miles?
