Established in 2002, Freeview is the United Kingdom’s digital terrestrial television platform. The service provides access to free-to-air TV channels and radio stations, including more than 70 standard channels and 15 HD channels – and that number keeps growing.

The Freeview market has undergone a lot of changes this past year – with ITVX replacing ITV Hub (and no longer working on some devices), along with older boxes that are now almost impossible to find. The Manhattan T3-R supports 4K (UltraHD) and HDR content, but for the time being, you won’t get to use it much. Last year, Freeview announced it will begin to phase out the Freeview HD brand – meaning all devices that want to display the official logo, would have to support Freeview Play.

Launched in 2015 Freeview Play is now the standard for new TV boxes in the UK, with over 10 million devices sold to date. Freeview Play reflects changing viewing habits as in addition to a full range of Freeview channels, including HD content, it also offers eight “on-demand players”; BBC iPlayer, ITVX, All 4, My5, UKTV Play, CBS Catchup Channels UK, Horror Bites and STV Player. If you want these, you’ll need a TV box from our super-smart Freeview Play range. You must have a standard rooftop aerial. With the cheaper Freeview HD models on their way out, that part of the market will be left to the manufacturers that sell cheap non-branded Freeview receivers.

Werecommend performing a Smart Retune after updating to ensure that all channels available to you are stored. Press MENU and select: Settings > Tuning > Smart Retune. Manhattan is a manufacturer totally focussed on the UK, which means we’re not always top of the priority list for the larger services. If your favourite service isn’t featured yet, then ask them to consider working with us - we’re always happy to talk about expanding the apps we offer. Freeview Play would already be a must-have if all it did was make it easy to catch up on your favourite shows through on demand apps like iPlayer and ITV Hub. But it’s so much more - it actually brings the content from these different apps together, making Freeview Play a joy to navigate. Manhattan's next option on our list is drastically different in terms of price point from the previous two options, and would be a seriously great choice for anyone who isn't concerned about recording or catch-up. As it doesn't have catch-up, the T1 is a Freeview HD box, not a Freeview Play one. HD and 4K both refer to the image quality of a show and specifically the number of pixels on offer. Most modern TVs can display content in HD and most content you’ll find on catch-up or on demand services can be accessed in HD.
